PHRASES TO UNLOCK THE MAGIC IN THE STORY. ✨
1. ‘ TELL ME MORE ABOUT THAT.’
When the guest says something interesting or starts an intriguing story — but doesn’t quite round it out, these 5 words are sure to unlock some magic. This allows the guest to know your interest is piqued, and they have the floor to go into further detail.
Be careful when you use this – sometimes it works TOO well.
2. ‘THIS IS WHAT I’M GATHERING…’
A question isn’t the only thing to invite the guest to dig deeper! Reflect back + summarize what you’re hearing from them. Reflecting back what you are hearing or understanding in your own words can help the guest clarify or dig deeper into the point or story they are trying to make.
It also gives you the opportunity to state the guest’s point in YOUR words (aka- words you believe your listener would most resonate with).
Sometimes your reflection won’t be accurate and the guest will correct you, but that’s okay! If you misunderstood, chances are – a listener would, too.
Pro Tip: This is most likely where the quotable moments from the conversation will be derived.
3. ‘I’D LIKE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS.’
Everyone likes to feel like their opinion is appreciated. Starting out a phrase with this will help the guest to feel like an expert, and help them step into a position of confidence.
These simple phrases will elevate any conversation. The art of the interview will drive what moments you choose to drop these phrases into the interaction to garner the most connection.
